- At the end of World War I, Austria-Hungary was broken apart.

- A peace settlement created Yugoslavia, which brought the region's Serbs, Bosnians, Croatians, Macedonians, Montenegrins and Slovenes together.
- Eventually a civil war broke out in the 1990s.
